Development Beyond Both Disengagement and Ego-Integrity
According to this model the individual develops through seven stages and, if all goes well, ends up in an eighth stage, which Erikson calls ego-integrity.
According to Erikson's theory, if the individual does not reach the eighth stage of ego-integrity, he/she experiences despair and fear of death.
The individual who reaches this eighth stage also recognizes ego-integrity in others who have come to the same destination.
